 Real Scars, Real Anatomy

AnatomySCAPES courses deliver a science-rich, visually immersive learning experience that transforms how you see and work with the human body. Our unique approach includes:

  • Stunning Visual Learning:  Gorgeous, dynamic imagery that makes complex anatomy accessible
  • Fascial Lens: Scar tissue is part of the fascia story. All three courses frame scar tissue and adhesions as part of the human Fascial System.
  • Real Anatomy: Your learning is supported with images & videos from AnatomySCAPES's work in the dissection lab.

Deeper understanding of the changes in the tissues created by scarring will guide your hands through the techniques you already know.

Course One:

Scar Tissue

In Course One, we introduce you to scar tissue itself. We'll dive into the process of healing through scar formation and follow scar tissue beneath the surface — through the layers of the skin to the deep fascia. We explore:

  • How is scar tissue formed and what's it made of?
  • What does scar tissue look like beneath the surface?
  • How does scarring change the local tissue and tissue relationships? What does that feel like to our hands as bodyworkers?
  • What does scar tissue have to do with fascia?

Course Two:

Peritoneal Adhesions

In Course Two, we go deeper! Peritoneal adhesions are an important part of the scar tissue story. Adhesions form as a type of internal scarring, a fibrotic connection that develops as a result of healing from a trauma, inflammatory processes, or surgery. In this third course, we explore:

  • What is the peritoneum? What's it made of, what's it do and how does it help create relationships in our gut?
  • What are adhesions? How do they form? What do they look like?
  • Can our bodywork prevent or treat adhesions? What's the research say?

Our explorations are grounded with gorgeous, visual imagery and video of real human tissue from AnatomySCAPES' work in the dissection lab.

Course Three:

C-section Scars

In Course Three, we pull together all the concepts from Courses One and Two to explore the anatomy impacted by C-section surgeries. Accounting for 21% of births worldwide, C-section is the most common surgery women undergo. Whether you work with the perinatal population or not, C-section scars will likely show up in your client population. In this course, we will:

  • Map out the anatomy of the abdominal wall (the surface-to-deep anatomy from skin to fat to deep fascia to muscle and into the abdominal and pelvic cavities).
  • Explore the specific anatomy impacted by C-section surgeries, identifying which tissues and tissue relationships change.
  • Visually explore real scar tissue from a C-section through images and video of AnatomySCAPES' work in the dissection lab.
